On February 1, 2010 the IOAS started working with the
Sustainable Agriculture Network in a pilot
project to provide independent accreditation of the certification and

label.
Press release
on SAN pilot project.
Scheme owner
The Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN) is a coalition of
independent non-profit conservation organizations that promote the social
and environmental sustainability of agricultural activities by developing
standards. The Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN) promotes efficient
agriculture, biodiversity conservation and sustainable community development
by creating social and environmental standards. SAN fosters best management
practices across agricultural value chains by encouraging farmers to comply
with SAN standards and by motivating traders and consumers to support
sustainability. Accredited certification bodies certify farms or group
administrators that comply with SAN’s standards and policies. Certified
farms or group administrators can apply for use of the Rainforest
Alliance Certified™ seal for products grown on certified farms.
Since 1992, more than 800 certificates for more than 200,000
farms - including small family farms of cooperatives, as well as plantations
- in over 30 countries have met the SAN standards on more than 1,000,000 ha
for more than 25 crops including coffee, cocoa, banana, tea, pineapple,
flowers and foliage, and citrus.
The requirements
The SAN accreditation system is based on ISO/IEC Guide
65:1996 with additional SAN requirements developed by SAN technical
experts. SAN has designated the IOAS as the accreditation body to assess and
monitor certification bodies that wish to provide certification to the SAN
standards as follows:
-
Standard for Sustainable
Agriculture, Standard for Sustainable Cattle Production Systems, List of
Prohibited Pesticides and Farm Certification Policy.
-
Group Certification Standard and
Group Certification Policy.
-
Chain of Custody Standard and
Chain of Custody Policy.
