Bioland e.V. - Germany

Bioland started life in 1971 as Bio-Gemuese e.V. as a body to promote the so called organic-biological method of agriculture, to educate, to research and lobby on behalf of members. Their first standards or principles of organic agriculture were included in the the articles of association in 1972.

Bioland and the Bioland trademark was created and registered in 1976 and shortly afterwards a first regional office was opened in Bavaria with others following in the 1980s. Today Bioland is a nationwide farmers' association with a base in Mainz alongside 8 regional State Associations an 1 regional office in South Tyrol (North of Italy) to offer service to the membership and promote the idea of organic farming in the regions.

Bioland has a democratic structure. The Federal Delegates Assembly (elected by the over 4500 farmer) of 40 delegates is the decision making body of the association. The Assembly meets twice per year to elect miscellaneous bodies, decide budgets, change statutes, set objectives and give assignments to the presidency of the association. The presidential committee is in day-to-day control of Bioland. These structures are supported by committees, of which one acts as steering standards committee which formulates and maintains updated the comprehensive range of standards that Bioland produce for its members and the non-primary producing contract members, such as processors and handlers.

Bioland is not registered as an inspection body under the EU Regulation, Bioland contracts out all of its inspections to several  inspection bodies which are trained to check the Bioland standards. On the basis of this fact-finding the Bioland Certification Committee makes the certification decisions against the Bioland Standards.

Bioland’s activities are focussed primarily on Germany but they do provide a service to producers in the northern part of Italy and in other neighbouring countries such as Belgium and the Netherlands. Bioland’s scope of the IFOAM Accreditation is Crop Production, Livestock, Aquaculture, Wild Collection, Processing and Handling
