BIOS - Italy

BIOS s.r.l. is a control and certification body for organic production which was established as a limited liability company on 13 of May 1996; it has its head office in Marostica in Northen Italy. It is IFOAM Accredited since August 2004.

The main aim of the organisation is the promotion and promotion of all activities related to inspection and certification of the organic agricultural sector, quality control of organic food products and training.

Bios operates also in certification of CO2 compensation, agri/food lines traceability, voluntary product certification and management of green areas according to organic principles .

BIOS started to operate in the organic agriculture sector in 1995. It was authorised to operate as an organic certification body by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture in 1999 and therefore is a registered inspection body under EU Regulation 2092/91.

Structurally BIOS consists of a head office where 10 staff are responsible for overall administration, technical issues, information services and liaison with government and other sector bodies. Six regional offices manage inspection and information flow at local level.

The Board of Directors consists of the three senior staff, but day to day work is overseen by the Managing Director and Quality Manager, Ermes Di Rossi and inspection work is organised by the Control Manager, Daniele Dal Molin. All inspectors are contracted and work within the various regions.

All certification decisions are overseen by a central, six-member Certification Commission which is made up of a range of representatives of the organic sector - producers, processors, consumers, quality systems and technical experts. The Certification Commission also acts as the stakeholder body of the organisation in terms of overseeing and review of policy and effective implementation of the quality system.

The scope of BIOS' IFOAM Accreditation and its own private standards covers crop production, livestock, wild harvest, processing and handling, retailing and certification transference procedures. It is planned to include the Smallholder Groups certification for the year 2006.
