Bolicert - Bolivia

Bolicert was founded in 1996 as a certification organisation in order to assist the development of ecological agriculture in Bolivia. Bolicert is constituted as a civil, non-profit association. The organisation was first granted IFOAM Accreditation in 1988.

Bolicert developed initially as the certification arm of the Asociación de Organizaciones de Productores Ecológicos de Bolivia (AOPEB), a producer group which now consists of nearly 50 member organisations throughout Bolivia. Presently, Bolicert is an organisation that has been operating independently since 2004 and is responsible for setting their own organic standards.

The Associates Assembly is the highest authority in Bolicert and must hold at least one ordinary meeting per year. The President of the Board is elected by the Associates from amongst their number.

The Board of Directors is the next highest authority and must consist of the President and at least 2 members (a producer and a consumer representative) and another member is from government organisations and/ other representative sectors. The Bolicert Board is responsible for ensuring that policies are implemented appropriately, for elaborating and carrying out short term work-plans, approving annual budgets and hiring and supervising staff. The Board oversees certification decision making as well the design and operation of the inspection and certification procedures.

The Board appoint an Administrative Director, who is responsible for coordination the inspection operations and the certification staff.

Bolicert has worked wonders in providing a quality service of such integrity in often difficult conditions particularly in terms of resources, human and financial. They operate one certification programme and all categories are in the IFOAM Accredited scope; crop production, livestock, wild products, processing and handling and grower groups.

A high proportion of Bolicert activity is focused on smallholder groups producing such products as cacao, coffee, tea, quinoa, nuts, tropical fruits, sesame, black beans, amaranth and dried products from banana and pineapple. Bolicert operates only in Bolivia.
