Consorzio per il Controllo dei Produtti Biologici - Italy

CCPB srl, more familiarly known as CCPB, comes from Consorzio per il Controllo dei Prodotti Biologici which was established in 1988 as a limited co-operative society with the sole purpose of performing organic inspection and certification in Italy. Approved by the national authorities in Italy, CCPB were awarded IFOAM Accreditation in 2000.

The Consortium was first established by a group of 11 companies representing small and large co-operative farms and private companies involved in farming, processing and distribution. All operators may become members of the Consortium.

Since the beginning of 2008, the Consorzio per il Controllo dei Prodotti Biologici Cooperativa deals with the representation and the promotion of its own company members in order to develop organic principles and market. On the other hand, CCPB srl carries aout all the certification and control activities.

Within the context of CCPB srl, the Sole Administrator is in charge of nominating the Certification Committee, the Standard Committee and the College of Arbitrators, essentially an appeal committee.

The Certification Committee defines the general criteria and the procedures for the control and certification activity. It also examines the admission of the companies to the control system and the subsequent certification of production. The Committee is representative of the operators with also representation from the Consumer Co-operatives and Associations. CCPB srl has a number of regional offices in Italy from which support is given to local operators, but all decisions are made centrally.

CCPB srl pride themselves in fielding well-trained and supported inspectors and do so by providing continuous training opportunities in relevant areas.

Inspections take place with a frequency dependent on the type of operation; the more complex or higher risk the operation, the more frequent the inspections. CCPB srl run an EU level programme in addition to the IFOAM Accredited Programme, the latter involving extra inspection checks. Only those operators inspected against the IFOAM level programme can claim to be part of the CCPB Global Programme.

Only members of Consorzio per il Controllo dei Prodotti Biologici are able to utilise the CONTROLLO BIOLOGICO mark, which is a registered trademark. During 2003, the CCPB Global Programme mark changed to that shown here and is combined with the IFOAM Seal.

CCPB's IFOAM Accredited Global Programme is active at present only in Italy and covers the areas of crop production, livestock and processing and handling.

With regards to organic productions, CCPB srl is also recognised in the US in compliance with NOP, in Japan according to JAS,and in Quebec in compliance with CAAQ.

Furthermore, CCPB srl offers other certifications, such as the Integrated Pest Management, Globalgap, the certification of traceability and that of  food farming product.
