Certified Organic Korea - S.Korea
Doalnara Certified Organic Korea, LLC (DCOK) is located in Wonju, South Korea. Originally operating as an organic certification services department of Doalnara Restoration Society - a non-profit corporation promoting health and global restoration - Doalnara Restoration Society (DRS) was the second certifying agency in South Korea to be accredited by the government in May 2002 to offer certification services for organic crops under Korea's Environmentally Friendly Agriculture Promotion Act (EFAPA) certification programme.
After 3 years of operation, the BoD of DRS realized the growing demand for organic certification and the need of a certifying agency in South Korea that could provide impartial, third party organic certification services meeting international standards. Hence, the organic certification services department of DRS was established as an independent limited liability company in September 2005 under its present name, Doalnara Certified Organic Korea, LLC (DCOK). DCOK was granted both IFOAM and ISO 65 accreditation by IOAS in 2006, thereby becoming the first IFOAM and ISO 65 accredited certification agency in South Korea.
Members of the Supervising Board, the highest governing board of the organization, are elected from among the Partners of the LLC. They must each represent a stakeholder. Day to day operations are managed by the Executive Director, Certification Manager and Quality Manager who form the management team. Certification staff and office staff assist in daily activities, as well as inspectors who carry out on-site inspections.
DCOK offers certification under the national EFAPA programme and the IFOAM level programme to their own organic standards with scope of crop production, livestock, wild harvest, processing and handling and product acceptance.
DCOK-certified operators produce a large variety of products including milk, eggs, meat, fruits, vegetables, and grains.
South Korea is a relatively small but fast growing market. Domestic production is mostly rice, vegetables and some fruit, such as the grapes shown in the photograph but also strawberries and oranges. A small range of processed organic products are produced in S.Korea and an increasing amount is imported.
