Global Organic Agriculturist Association - S.Korea

The Global (initially Green) Organic Agriculturist Association was formed in South Korea with the aim of providing a range of products that are beneficial not only for consumers but for the environment as a whole. From then on GOAA started developing a range of activities including training and advisory programmes and ultimately standards and certification of organic products.

South Korea has a fast developing consumer interest in organic foods alongside the more already well-established low input systems. The Korean labelling system for fresh produce and grains is generically called environmentally friendly and has a range of 4 national symbols ranging from organic to low chemical. Imports from other parts of the world have been expanding, hence the need for government and private sector surveillance.

Following the establishment of the certification programme the organisation was accredited by the National Agriculture Products Quality Management Service in February 2005 and was recently granted IFOAM Accreditation in December 2006.

GOAA is composed of a General Assembly of members who elect the Board of Directors for 3 years at a time to manage the Certification Body. Their articles of incorporation set out the organisation aims as:

1. To restore the land and environment destroyed and contaminated by agro-chemicals;
2. To join the movement to sustain a sound environment for the coming generation;
3. To certify safe food for humans;
4. To educate and train organic producers;
5. To help the organic producers have the international competitive power;
6. To lead and open marketing for the organic producers.

A stakeholder Certification Committee reviews certification decisions and is responsible for the formulation of policy matters and supervision of the implementation of GOAA policies.

GOAA operate a domestic programme and the IFOAM level programme which is active in certification of crop production, livestock, wild products, processing and handling and retailers.

GOAA are an applicant for accreditation against ISO/IEC Guide 65.
