Instituto Biodinamico - Brasil

IBD commenced life in Brazil as Instituto Biodinâmico for Rural Development in the late 1980s. They prepared their first own standards in 1988 and started inspection and certification in 1990. They became IFOAM Accredited in 1995, the first certification body to do so in South America, and they continue as a leading influence in the organic scene in Brazil and Latin America in general.

With their headquarters in Botucatu, 2,5 hours drive from Sao Paulo, IBD have championed the promotion of biodynamic and organic agriculture in Brazil and offer certification to both organic and biodynamic labels throughout the whole of Brazil and Latin America.

The main purpose of IBD is to participate in the development of organic and biodynamic agriculture and its markets, through certification. Today IBD's field inspectors number over 30 with 25 staff based in their head office.

Since 1999, the standard setting function of IBD has been delegated to a separate body Associaçăo Biodinâmica, although IBD personnel retain some input in their content. A General Assembly elects a Board of Directors and a Fiscal Committee. The Board is formed by members representing a balance of interests in the Association, which are: research, production, processing & handling, trade, consumers and certification.

Today IBD certifies 650 operations including grower groups, indigenous communities and familiar agriculture with together 3.300 small farmers, individual farms, industries and traders. The certified area under organig management and sustainable wild crop harvesting is 1.84 milion hectares.

The IFOAM Accredited Programme  includes, crop production, livestock, processing and handling, wild products, input manufacturing and grower groups.

The IBD non-IFOAM accredited programmes and protocols are:

IBD EcoSocial Programme; Protocols for cosmetics and restaurants; USDA-NOP; EU Regulation EEC 2092/91, DEMETER Guidelines
