Istituto
per la Certificazione Etica e Ambientale - Italy
Out of AIAB, has grown ICEA, the Istituto per la Certificazione Etica e Ambientale.
AIAB was founded in 1982 under the name of “Comissione Nazionale Cos'e` Biologica” as a union of both consumer and organic producer grassroots organisations with the purpose of setting standards for organic agriculture. The name was changed to Associazone Italiana per l'Agricoltura Biologica (AIAB) in 1988.
AIAB was recognised as an EU control body in 1992 and continued to subsequently update and develop standards including those for organic wine. In 1999 AIAB became IFOAM Accredited
ICEA is a non-profit Consortium constituted between associations and organisations operating in the field of activities connected with environment-friendly, fair trade and sustainable development.
The Consortium was founded by AIAB, Banca Popolare Etica (Ethical Bank), Demeter (Association for the protection of bio-dynamic quality in Italy), ANAB (National Association for Bio-ecological Architecture) and ACU (Consumers' Association), with a view to offering a certification service based on the principles of independence, transparency, objectivity, impartiality and competence.
Their goal is the building up of suppliers' and consumers' confidence in the certified products, through verification of product conformity to voluntary or binding regulations. The Consortium's registered office is in Bologna, Italy.
AIAB remains responsible for further development of organic standards and own the Garanzia AIAB label, which forms part of the logo of the IFOAM Accredited Programme implemented by ICEA. ICEA operates the Garanzia AIAB programme under license to AIAB.
During 2005 ICEA has been the leading force of all the Italian IFOAM ACBs and relative standard setting organisations like AIAB to develop a common IFOAM standard for Italy: the Italian Organic Standard or IOS. The standard obtained IFOAM validation in July 2005 as a Approved Regional Standard, the first ever.
The IOS also includes the provisions laid down by the EU Regulation 2092/91.
The IFOAM Accredited scope of the IOS Programme covers crop production, livestock, wild products, processing and handling. In 2006 this allowed ICEA to include most of its certified operators under the newly adopted Certification Standard.
ICEA also hold IOAS accreditation
against ISO65 with scope of the AIAB Organic Environmental Friendly Cosmetic
Standard and the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
