Istituto
Mediterraneo - Italy
IMC was established in 1995 when AMAB (Associazione Marchigiana Agricoltura Biologica) decided to separate inspection and certification activities from its main function as a farmer association. First incorporated as the Mediterranean Association for Organic Farming - Institute of Certification, this name was changed in April 1996 to IMC Association - Istituto Mediterraneo Di Certificazione.
In 1998 a General Shareholder's meeting decided to transform the association into a company and the President of AMAB and the Managing Director of Bioqualita srl established the limited partnership called Istituto Mediterraneo Di Certificazione srl based in Senigalia in central Italy where it remains today.
The main focus of IMC is performing certification. At present IMC certifies organic products according to 2 different standards: the EU Regulation 2092/91 and the standards of Garanzia Biologico AMAB, the latter being the IFOAM Accredited Programme. A further objective of IMC is to promote and carry out research and training activities in the field of organic agriculture and food production and IMC are also active in other fields of certification such as ISO9000 and ISO14000, denomination of origin, food systems traceability and quality food and catering services.
Certification decisions are made by certification staff together with a central stakeholder Certification Committee who meet regularly. There are a number of regional IMC offices within Italy, but these are administrative only. IMC also have an office in Egypt and have plans for one in Tunisia but the certification performed there (and in several other countries) does not cover the Garanzia AMAB and is therefore outside of the IFOAM programme scope.
Over 800 producer operators and 78 processor-manufacturers are certified under the IMC AMAB programme.
The AMAB programme of IMC covers crop production, livestock, wild products, processing and handling and certification transference with operators only in Italy. IMC are also approved by the Ministry of Agriculture in Japan as a registered certification body and by the United States Department of Agriculture. All IMC AMAB operators are permitted to use the IFOAM Seal on their products.
