IOAS celebrate the 20th IFOAM accreditation anniversary of NASAA Certified Organic Pty. Ltd.

December 1, 2014

IOAS are happy to announce that we will be celebrating NASAA Certified Organic Pty. Ltd (Also known as NCO) being awarded IFOAM accreditation for twenty continuous years this November.

IFOAM accreditation is the international verification of competence for certification bodies active in organic agriculture. It is for those certification bodies who want to demonstrate their commitment to the global organic movement and who want to show their support for a harmonised, common-sense conformity assessment system. IFOAM accreditation can be used by country authorities as a simple mechanism for equivalence of imports.

NASAA itself was formed in 1986 to support the education of industry and consumers on organic, biodynamic and sustainable agricultural practices. NASAA is committed to developing and maintaining organic standards; assisting operators in gaining organic certification; and conducting ongoing compliance supervision. NASAA Certified Organic (NCO), the IFOAM Accredited Body, is a fully-owned subsidiary of NASAA. Apart from IFOAM
Accreditation, NCO currently holds accreditation under the NOP and the JAS systems.

NCO certification covers more than 5.5 million hectares and over 900 licensed operators. In addition to certifying operations within Australia, NCO is the only Australian certifier with extensive operation overseas, certifying production and processing operations in more than 13 countries – comprising over 12,500 small farmers. This international network ensures worldwide recognition for the NASAA label.

According to Jan Denham, NASAA Chair (she was already Chair of NASAA in 1994 at the time of signature of their first IFOAM Accreditation contract), “IFOAM Accreditation has guided NASAA in establishing a well recognised and credible Certification program. The IFOAM accredited certifiers group also gave NASAA a worldwide network of certifiers willing to share knowledge and assist with issues.”
