National Association of Sustainable Agriculture Australia - Australia

NASAA is a registered non-profit company limited by guarantee which was formed in 1986, and incorporated in 1987 to certify producers, processors and others who wish to operate according to its standards for organic and biodynamic production. NASAA was amongst the first group of organisations to become IFOAM Accredited in 1994 and also one of the first certification organisations to be granted Guide 65 accreditation with scope of the NASAA private organic standards in 2004.

NASAA is a membership organisation and licensees have the option to become members. A Board of 5 persons is elected by the membership. They direct the activities of 8 staff based at Stirling near Adelaide.

The Board delegates powers to a Certification Committee and takes no direct role in certification decisions. Appeals are heard by a specially commissioned Appeals Committee, which includes a Director as Appeal Committee Chair.

NASAA currently certifies approximately 1100 producers, processors and retailers and almost 8 million hectares in Australia. It certifies approximately 12,300 operators and co-operative-based farmers in the Australasia-Pacific region.

Increasingly NASAA is extending its certification services throughout the Pacific and south-east Asia  providing inspection for, amongst others, smallholder groups and other operators in East Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Sri Lanka and the Solomon Islands.

The NASAA IFOAM Accredited Programme covers crop production, livestock, wild products, aquaculture, processing and handling, input manufacturing and grower groups. Fibre processing remains excluded for now

NASAA runs a non-IFOAM retailer/trader certification scheme and a non-organic Humane Choice option (in association with Humane Choice Internacional) for livestock operators concerned with animal welfare.  NASAA is also accredited to provide US National Organic Programme certification (which is not covered by their IFOAM Accreditation) and is currently renewing its existing JAS accreditation.
