Soil Association Certification Ltd - United Kingdom

Few organisations in organic agriculture have quite the pedigree of the Soil Association. Founded in the United Kingdom in 1946 by Lady Eve Balfour its aims were, and remain to this day, to bring together all those with an interest in organic agriculture, concern for the environment, food quality and human health.

As a charity the Soil Association exists to research, develop and promote sustainable relationships between the soil, plants, animals, people and the biosphere, in order to produce healthy food and other products while protecting and enhancing the environment.

SA Certification Ltd., is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Soil Association charity, and exists to carry out inspection and certification to the Soil Association standards. SA Certification first became IFOAM Accredited in 1996.

SA Certification operates two certification schemes: the Soil Association symbol programme (to the Soil Association standards) and their IFOAM accredited scheme: the Global Partnership Programme.

SA Certification is directed by its own Board and the organic certification schemes are controlled by an independent Certification Scrutiny Committee. SA Certification's inspection and certification is split into Producer and Processor teams, all under the overall management of an inspection director and a certification and integrity director respectively. This structure ensures both expertise and accountability in SA Certification's inspection and certification.

SA Cert have performed much ground breaking work in developing product acceptance agreements between certification bodies to ensure equivalent standards have been applied from farm to plate.

As part of their commitment to international partnerships, SA Certification actively promote the training and employment of local inspectors. The Global Partnership Programme covers crops, livestock, wild harvest, processing and handling, input manufacturing, retail and smallholder groups.
