South Korea announces transition period

January 13, 2014

The Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) announced the implementation of the Korean Environment Friendly Organic Regulations on January 1, 2014. At the same as announcing the implementation of the new regulation, MAFRA announced a plan for a six month ‘education period’ (up to June 30, 2014) to allow a transition to the new requirements. As written the regulations only allow imports from equivalent countries or from exporters certified by certification bodies directly accredited by the Korean authorities. IFOAM and the IOAS have been working with the Korean authorities to try to maintain product entry based on IFOAM accreditation, a route which has functioned well for the last 10 years.
