Regulators and
regulations: Republic of China (Taiwan)
On January 29th, 2009 a law regulating labelling of
domestic and imported products as organic came into full effect in Taiwan.
Before the 2007 regulations were operating voluntarily.
Exports of organic products can now only gain access to the Taiwanese market
through one of several routes:
Under the first option, the
Taiwanese Comitte on Agriculture said it recognizes the regulation of 16 countries for raw or
processed crop products - the United Kingdom,
France, Austria, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, New
Zealand, Australia, Sweden, Luxembourg, Greece, Spain, Ireland, Belgium,
Portugal and the USA. Australia, New Zealand and the USA are recognised for
raw or processed livestock products.
In November 2009, Taiwan have announced that they also recognise as
equivalent the Canadian Organic Regime. Products accompanied by certificates
indicating inspection and compliance with the Canadian Organic Regime will
be accepted.
The IOAS has submitted a request to the Council of
Agriculture in Taiwan that IFOAM Accreditation be recognised as equivalent
to the Taiwanese standards and certification requirements.
